Pacific Fair saves water

Pacific Fair Takes New Steps to Conserve Water

As concerns about water shortages make headlines across Australia, the responsibility falls on the whole community to help conserve water supplies.

Pacific Fair the Gold Coast’s premier shopping destination, managed by AMP Capital Shopping Centres, is actively pooling its resources to make water conservation a business priority.

As part of its latest environmental campaign, Pacific Fair has installed new water tanks throughout the centre with a combined capacity of 130,000 litres.

The new tank system will irrigate Pacific Fair’s gardens, using the centre’s own water supplies collected from rain water run off and ground water. This means that all of the centre’s gardens, one of its trademarks, will be watered without drawing on local town supplies.

The new water tanks are part of Pacific Fair’s sustainable approach to the environment, which includes working with retailers and the local community on a number of projects to save water.

Some of the other practical measures already in place include installing flow restrictors in washrooms and dual flush toilets, which will help to decrease Pacific Fair’s total consumption of water significantly, by up to 25 per cent over three years.

According to Centre Manager for Pacific Fair, Ian Spackman, becoming more environmentally sustainable has been a key priority for the centre for a while now.

“At Pacific Fair, we believe that as a shopping destination with hundreds of retailers and thousands of customers every week, it is important that the centre is accountable to the local community and environment on a number of levels,” said Mr Spackman.

“Water conservation is one of our key concerns and installing rain water tanks is our latest initiative to reduce our consumption by a quarter. It’s our view that everyone from centre management to retailers and customers can do their bit to help.”

Pacific Fair’s other water saving initiatives include:
• Investigating stormwater recharging of the ground water
• Obtaining recycled water from the council
• Fitting timing devices on taps
• Installing dual flush toilets
• Spear pumps for irrigations
• Flow restrictors for all taps (this will reduce water flow from 38 litres per minute to 7 litres per minute)

Mr Spackman said, “Water conservation is just the beginning for us. Pacific Fair is committed to a number of other environmental activities ranging from recycling waste to supporting National Tree Day, to help set a positive ‘green’ example in the local community.”

Pacific Fair features a four-level Myer Department Store, Kmart, Target, Coles Supermarket, a Birch Carroll & Coyle 12 Senstadium Cinema complex and over 300 specialty stores and services.

The Centre is open seven days a week and occupies a 16.6 hectare site with more than 5,200 carparks – more than half of which are undercover,

Pacific Fair is one of Australia’s best sales performers, consistently in the nation’s top ten performers list.
