Earth Hour
Friday, March 28th, 2008LIGHTS OUT AT PACIFIC FAIR
There should be no cause for alarm when the lights are dimmed on the iconic waterlily at Pacific Fair on Saturday night – this will simply be a case of charity at work.
Pacific Fair, along with fellow AMP Capital Shopping Centres throughout Australia, will be supporting Earth Hour by turning off the lights from 8pm to 9pm on Saturday 29 March. Earth Hour, which started in Sydney last year as an initiative of the conservation group WWF-Australia, is part of an international effort to reduce global warming.
Earth Hour has once again put out the call businesses and members of the public to turn off their lights and appliances in support of the event.
This year Pacific Fair has once again answered the call and will support Earth Hour at a local level by turning off external lights including the Pacific Fair signs featuring the iconic neon waterlily.
Pacific Fair centre manager John Green said not only will their effort help reduce energy consumption, it will show others just how simple it is to make a difference.
“Pacific Fair is proud to be working with the local community to take a positive step towards reducing global greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Green said.
“The centre is the prime venue from which to assert a positive message about taking responsibility for our planet. We hope to set an example for our customers and retailers and inspire them to introduce some changes that will help support a more environmentally sustainable future.”
The Earth Hour initiative has already resulted in 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses in Sydney turning off their lights for one hour, reducing the city's energy consumption by 10.2%.
When icons such as the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House participated the world took notice resulting in the signing up of Adelaide, Atlanta, Bangkok, Brisbane, Canberra, Chicago, Christchurch, Copenhagen, Dublin, Manila, Melbourne, Montreal, Odense, Ottawa, Perth, Phoenix, San Francisco, Suva, Tel Aviv, Toronto and Vancouver. All these cities will turn off their lights for an hour in the name of fighting global warming.
